Missions Study Series #5 – God Reveals His Purpose / The Psalms

Making God’s name great and revealing His glory are the same thing. They are a manifestation or demonstration of His nature and character. As we finish up our study of the Old Testament, we turn to the Psalms and the Prophets. The following passages explicitly state God’s intention to be glorified among all nations and require very little explanation.

Psalm 9:11
“Sing praises to the Lord, enthroned in Zion; proclaim among the nations what he has done.”

Psalm 22:27-28
“All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him, for dominion belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations.”

Psalm 46:10
“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’”

Psalm 47:1
“Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. How awesome Is the Lord Most High, the great King over all the earth!”

Psalm 72:18-19
“Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds. Praise be to his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and Amen.”

Psalm 96
“Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord all the earth. Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples….Ascribe to the Lord, O families of nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength…Say among the nations, ‘The Lord reigns.’”

Psalm 99: 1-3
“The Lord reigns, let the nations tremble; he sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake. Great is the Lord in Zion; he is exalted over all the nations. Let them praise your great and awesome name – he is holy.”

Psalm 105:1
“Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done.”

Isaiah 49:6
&ldquoGod says directly to Isaiah, “It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.”

Isaiah 56:6-7
“for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.”

Habakuk 2:14
“For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.”

Malachi 1:11
“My name will be great among the nations, from the rising to the setting of the sun.”

Missions is the natural extension of God’s desire to be glorified among all nations because that is its goal. If we believe that God is passionate about His glory in all the nations, then we must be passionate about missions until His name is glorified among ALL the nations.

“Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.” – Psalm 96:3
